Martin`s starting stats

I was at Liverpool`s win over Southampton, where Roberto Firmino scored his 20th goal and got his 11th assist in 36 games this season.

Georginio Wijnaldum played his 50th away game in the Premier League and is still yet to score in any of them. He has scored 18 goals in his 48 home matches for Newcastle and Liverpool.

Five former Saints faced Southampton on Sunday, including Dejan Lovren who made his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana were the others.

Liverpool have scored 94 goals in 38 games this season, overtaking last season`s 92 from 47 matches. They also overtook their Premier League away goals tally from the whole of last season. They got 33 in 19 last term and already have 34 in 14 this season.

Southampton have won one in 14 and none in seven at home in the Premier League. In contrast, Liverpool have suffered just one league defeat in 18, which came at Swansea.

Top of the Klopps?

Jurgen
Jurgen Klopp celebrating with Virgil Van Dijk after Liverpool`s win over Southampton

How does Jurgen Klopp`s win record compare to other Liverpool managers after 95 league games? Matthew, Bootle

MARTIN SAYS: Jurgen Klopp presided over his 50th Premier League win in 95 matches at the weekend.

That victory meant Klopp emulated Brendan Rodgers` record of winning 50 top-flight matches in his first 95 Premier League games at Liverpool.

In the Premier League era, Rafa Benitez remains Liverpool`s most successful manager after 95 league games, as he won 52 of his matches.

Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish are the only Liverpool managers with a higher number of league wins than the current Newcastle boss after 95 games.

Shankly guided Liverpool to 54 wins while Dalglish`s record was a mightily impressive 59 wins. Interestingly, though, Dalglish and Klopp lost the same number of games (17) in that time.

Bob Paisley won 51 of his first 95, meaning only six Liverpool managers have won 50 or more of their first 95 league matches.

Left for dead

Mohamed
Mohamed Salah is well on course to beat Robbie Fowler`s record for left-footed goals scored in a single season

Has anyone scored more left-footed goals in a season than Mo Salah? James, Liverpool

MARTIN SAYS: There is no stopping Mohamed Salah at the moment. His goal at St Mary`s live on Super Sunday was his 22nd in the Premier League, 19 of which have come via his trusted left-foot.

In finishing that chance against the Saints, Salah emulated a longstanding record set by Robbie Fowler in 1994-95 for left-footed goals scored in a Premier League season.

Behind the Liverpool duo is Robin Van Persie, who struck 18 left-footed goals in his Golden Boot winning campaign in 2012/13 while he also managed 17 the season before.

Top ten left-footed goalscorers in a Premier League season

Mohamed Salah 19 goals Liverpool (2017-18)
Robbie Fowler 19 goals Liverpool (1994-95)
Robin van Persie 18 goals Man United (2012-13)
Robin van Persie 17 goals Arsenal (2011-12)
Gareth Bale 16 goals Spurs (2012-13)
Robbie Fowler 16 goals Liverpool (1995-96)
Daniel Sturridge 14 goals Liverpool (2013-14)
Riyad Mahrez 13 goals Leicester (2015-16)
Romelu Lukaku 12 goals Everton (2016-17)
Robin van Persie 12 goals Arsenal (2010-11)

The Premier League record is 19 so far, but Lionel Messi scored a remarkable 44 left-footed goals in La Liga in 2011/12 - and 40 the season after. In fact he`s scored more than 25 left-footed league goals in five separate seasons!

Diving disciplinary records

It
It was a disappointing day for Chris Smalling and Manchester United at St James` Park

Which club has received the most yellow cards for diving since the start of last season? Louise, Gateshead

MARTIN SAYS: Chris Smalling became the third Manchester United player to be cautioned for simulation in the Premier League this season after Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera received the same punishment earlier in the campaign.

As well as being a defender, what made Smalling`s caution more unusual was the fact that the offence occurred in his own half!

Smalling`s booking means that Manchester United players have been booked four times for diving since the start of last season; Paul Pogba was booked against West Ham last November.

They now rank joint-top for yellow cards given for diving since the start of last season, alongside Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, Tottenham, Swansea City and West Ham, have seen three players cautioned for diving in that time.

Dele Alli, who was given a yellow card against Liverpool earlier this month and Leroy Sane, are the only two players to have been booked twice for diving in that period.

Bookings for simulation since start of 2017/18:

FOUR: Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Man Utd

THREE: Man City, Swansea, Tottenham, West Ham

TWO: Arsenal, Burnley, Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool, Stoke, Sunderland

ONE: Brighton, Everton, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Southampton, Watford, West Brom

ZERO: Hull

Arsenal`s defensive difficulties

Harry
Harry Kane`s header condemned Arsenal to a 1-0 defeat at Wembley

It seems like an eternity since Arsenal last kept a clean sheet in the Premier League! Is this their longest run without one in the competition? Luke, Walthamstow

MARTIN SAYS: Harry Kane`s winning goal in Saturday`s north London derby meant that Arsenal have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last nine league games.

That`s their second longest run without a clean sheet in Premier League history (and Petr Cech has been on 199 Premier League clean sheets for all of that time, waiting to reach 200).

Should they concede in their next two matches against Manchester City live on Sky Sports Premier League on March 1 and against Brighton a few days later, they will equal their worst record in the competition`s history. They would break it if they then conceded against Watford on March 11.

Their longest Premier League run without keeping a clean sheet was 11 games which ended in February 2002 when they won 1-0 against Everton.

Interestingly, despite their indifferent defensive record that season, Arsenal went on to win the Premier League title.

They won six, drew four and only lost one of those 11 matches without a clean sheet. They have only won three of the last nine this season, drawing three and losing three.
