Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was hurt while tackling Aleksandar Kolarov

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain`s hopes of making England`s World Cup squad were dealt a serious blow after the midfielder was stretchered off during Liverpool`s Champions League semi-final first-leg win over Roma.

The England international suffered what appeared to be a knee injury when tackling Aleksandar Kolarov in the 18th minute and received lengthy treatment on the pitch.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was given further attention on the touchline after hobbling off, with the physios calling for a stretcher after deciding he could not continue.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp fears the 24-year-old has suffered a really bad injury, and with England boss Gareth Southgate set to name his 35-man provisional squad for the World Cup by May 14, Oxlade-Chamberlain`s place in the side now looks under threat.

We don`t know exactly but if the medical department are quite concerned without a scan, you can imagine it`s difficult, Klopp said after Liverpool`s 5-2 win.

The season is not that long anymore. It doesn`t look good.

I`m a very positive person and still hope it only feels bad, but is not that bad. We`ll see.

We lost a fantastic player tonight. It`s not good news.

Oxlade-Chamberlain featured in both of England`s March friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy and had looked certain to be included in squad for this summer`s finals in Russia.

He has made 42 appearances since joining Liverpool from Arsenal last August and scored his fifth goal of the season in the Reds` 3-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
